‘Michael Pos DIRECT from Sounds of Nashville feat. Blue House Band’ Is a Soulful, Groove-Driven Comeback

Michael Pos’s latest EP, ‘Michael Pos DIRECT from Sounds of Nashville feat. Blue House Band’, is a work of musical catharsis. After a long career followed by a sabbatical from music to focus on family and spiritual pursuits, the Arkansas native and former Nashville resident is back, reenergized and unapologetically true to himself. Recorded direct-to-tape with the live band at Sounds of Nashville, it’s the first live release from the veteran singer and multi-instrumentalist, and with the backing of the Blue House Band – a group of session aces whose groove is second to none – there is an almost immediate intensity to this 3-track effort.

“Move My Ship” opens the EP with assurance and ease, rolling along on a combination of warm guitar grooves and a pocket so deep it sucks you into the groove almost before you can settle into the song. Lyrically it’s an anthem of resurrection, a mantra for keeping your faith in the face of doubt and instability. Pos sings it with a coolness that suggests he’s been waiting years for the right moment to release this particular songbird, and this is it. Following “Move My Ship” is a little instrumental gem called “Puertecitos”, which, not coincidentally, was recorded while Pos was on vacation in Baja. It’s smooth and loose and infused with color and imagery, rolling like the waves on the sea shores. The vibe is open and conversational, a groove that’s content to let its listeners’ imaginations wander and explore the places that only music can reach.

Wrapping up the EP is a song with a completely different energy, but just as focused and fluid as what preceded it. “Love to Dance” is a song about – what else? – dancing to the music, being present and free and celebrating art for art’s sake. The groove is infectious, the jam spontaneous, and Pos glides over both with his relaxed, assured tenor. The whole EP is filled with this kind of liberation, a sense of being free to be who and what you are, without apology or pretense. Rooted in blues, funk, Americana, and jazz but too eclectic to be boxed into any of them, ‘DIRECT from Sounds of Nashville’ is the first salvo in a what’s sure to be a long, fruitful return to music-making for the irrepressible Michael Pos.
