Highroad No. 28 – Thistroubledsoul
Highroad No. 28’s new single Thistroubledsoul feels like the kind of song that doesn’t just play in the background — it settles in, stays with you, and makes you sit with whatever you’ve been avoiding. It’s dark, emotional, and surprisingly delicate for a band that’s always had one foot in the heavier side of rock. What stands out immediately is the atmosphere. The guitars feel wide and cinematic, almost like they’re building a storm on the horizon, while the bass and drums keep everything grounded and tense. On top of that, Andrew JC’s vocals are raw in a way that doesn’t sound forced — it sounds like he’s actually working through something while he sings. Knowing he performed every instrument himself only adds to that feeling. This track really does sound like someone closing a door, turning off the lights, and working through their own inner noise.

The theme is pretty clear: this is a song about the weight you carry when nobody’s around to see it. The quiet battles, the emotional bruises that don’t show on the surface — all the stuff people rarely talk about openly. There’s a line Andrew shared about the track being about “the scars you don’t see,” and that really sums it up. You can hear that vulnerability in the way the song never explodes for the sake of it; instead, it slowly tightens its grip. Thistroubledsoul fits right between haunting and melodic — the kind of track that would sit perfectly on an alternative rock playlist built for late-night drives or long, reflective walks.
This single also continues the lead-up to their upcoming album The Will to Endure, due December 2025. If this and the previous single Ache are any indication, the band is moving into a darker and more emotionally honest space than ever before. For a group that’s been through multiple lineups, long breaks, and entire stylistic evolutions, this comeback doesn’t feel like nostalgia. It feels like a band rediscovering its core — not by recreating the past, but by leaning into what’s real for them right now. Thistroubledsoul is one of those songs that doesn’t try to impress you — it tries to reach you. And it does.
