“This is Only a Test” is a Wild Basement Ride You’ll Want on Repeat

Crooked Cranes’ EP ‘This is Only a Test’ released on May 9, 2025 meets all expectations that its title sets up while surpassing them. The band stayed authentic by recording their EP in their childhood basement which holds many shared memories that range from great to chaotic. This EP doesn’t try too hard. The EP exists naturally within its own atmosphere where it merges grunge sounds with stoner rock elements and lo-fi narrative elements. The music reflects its creation during foggy nights and heartfelt discussions which contributes to its unexpectedly strong impact.

The opening track “GF” plunges directly into chaotic territory. This track delivers a loud and raw narrative about a man who struggles with conflicting feelings of wanting to punch his father yet feeling proud of him because his father slept with his girlfriend. Wild, right? “Mehico” presents a gritty true account of his encounter with an actual cartel leader in southern territory. It’s not polished, and that’s the point. The rawness feels alive. “Dolfin” transitions the atmosphere with a slower, atmospheric song about a mysterious girl who refuses to reveal her identity. The track “Interstate Song” maintains a relaxed atmosphere with its chill vibe which makes it ideal for driving along with your eyes half-closed.

“Met A Gurl” revives the energy after the music seems to quiet down. This breakup track stands apart because it reacts with a casual shrug and a loud guitar riff rather than tears. “NeWay” concludes the EP through its groovy and foggy sound which embodies the essence of late nights spent getting high with music playing softly. ‘This is Only a Test’ that requires no overthinking from you. Its roughness gives the album its memorable quality.
